While at Creighton School of Law, she was awarded Dean's Merit Scholarship and CALI Excellence for Future Award in the Study of Professional Responsibility (Legal Ethics). She graduated from the post-graduate 3-year PhD course "Aspirantura" from Grodno University School of Law with emphasis in the Theory and History of State and Law, and Political Teachings, and Studies of the Language of the Law and History of Legal Language.

Ms. Smal is admitted to practice law in Nebraska, USA, and Belarus. She is familiar with both legal systems: American Legal system and European Civil Law system. She is a member of the American Bar Association, American Immigration Lawyers Association, and Nebraska Bar Association.
